philosophy
nature
We are a specialty nursery growing hardy wildflowers, ornamental grasses, and select cultivars. In creating the plant pallette particular attention has been given to plants that are hardy, robust-growing, and low-maintenance while embodying a more natural or wild aesthetic. The majority of these plants have a long season of interest, and for that reason are particularly useful in keeping our gardens attractive from spring into winter. Ultimately, we chose to grow plants not for their rarity or popularity, but for the emotional and artistic effect they contribute to the garden as a whole. As both gardeners and nature lovers our goal is to inspire and encourage imagination in the art of garden creating with respect to the dynamic beauty and emotion of nature.
stock/potting medium
herbaceous perennials/organic
Herbaceous perennials, as opposed to woody perennials, are the ideal plant choice in use for planting design. They are quick to mature, easily propagated, and dynamic in their growth, and character. Indeed, unlike any other, they are a medium of constant change and directly represent the changing seasons.
We are involved in all aspects of the nursery process from seed to plant maturity. The cycle begins every fall with the harvesting of seed. Continuing in early spring, seed is planted in a small greenhouse with the resulting plant transplanted into nursery rows in the field to mature for later harvest in years to come. Later in the spring as the nursery beds begin to thaw, plant division and potting takes center stage.
Though not certified organic, we practice organic methods in the field and when we custom make our potting soil. The mixture is a combination of locally made finished compost, sand, and peat amended with tried and true organic fertilizers such as greensand, rock phosphate, and alfalfa meal. The resulting potting soil sustains each plant well into the marketing season where by no plants are sold stunted or under-nourished. Instead plants are healthy and quick to establish themselves in the garden.
